#BURKINAFASO: Military Gov't Extends Power Five Years

Burkina Faso's military government has announced it will extend junta rule for another five years.

The west African country's ruler, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, will also be able to contest the next presidential election, the state-owned broadcaster says.

When he seized power in a coup nearly two years ago, Capt Traore pledged to restore the civilian government by July 1st of this year.

#BURKINAFASO: Free And Fair Elections Held After 2014 Coup

The country that overthrew long-serving Pres. Blaise Compaoré last year, then survived a coup attempt this September, has successfully held free and fair elections. Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, a former prime minister and parliamentary speaker, won 53.49 per cent of the vote, followed by former Finance Minister Zephirin Diabré with 29.65 per cent. The turnout was 60 per cent of the 5.5 million registered voters.

West African leaders mediating post-coup talks in Burkina Faso on Sunday proposed a return of the ousted interim president in return for an amnesty for the coup makers who seized power this week. A November vote is also being floated by negotiators.

#BURKINAFASO: Ex-President Charged With Treason For Troop Crackdown On Demonstrators

Former prime minister Luc Adolphe Tiao, who signed an order authorizing the army to crush an October uprising, has been charged with assault and battery, murder and complicity to murder demonstrators. The demonstrations were sparked by his desire to amend the constitution to allow him to run for a third term.

#BURKINAFASO: Allies of Toppled Leader Compaore Banned From Running In October National Election

Burkina Faso's interim parliament voted Tuesday to bar figures linked to deposed president Blaise Compaore from running for office, hours after several of the toppled leader's allies were arrested. Compaore was ousted in October, 2014 after violent public reaction to extend his 27-year reign by amending the constitution.
