#IRELAND: Trade Unions Ask President To Save 50 Jobs

Trade unions representing workers at Premier Periclase in Drogheda, Ireland have called on President Leo Varadkar to intervene to save more than 50 jobs following the decision by new owners to suspend operations at the plant over “spiralling energy costs”.

The company exited bankruptcy in May after a survival plan was approved by the nation's High Court.

#CANADA: Opposition Parties Urge Liberals To Act On Inflation

The Conservatives and the New Democrats are demanding that the federal government introduce new measures to address the rising cost of living for Canadians, with different approaches to tackle the inflation crisis.

The Conservatives have put forward an opposition day motion asking that the government temporarily suspend the Goods and Services tax collected on gasoline and diesel, freeze the carbon tax, and eliminate tariffs on fertilizer, among other requests, in order to provide immediate relief to Canadians.

But NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh argued the way to tackle risk ng prices is by imposing an excess profit tax on big companies.

“We see clearly that corporations are making these massive profits. They’re making record-setting profits and their record-setting profits are directly contributing to the cost of living going up,” Singh said.

#IRELAND: Truckers Stage Mass Fuel Price Protest In Dublin

The Tom Clarke Bridge/East Link Bridge in Dublin is blocked at both ends due to a fuel prices protest by truckers who are demanding Transport Minister Eamon Ryan resign and want diesel capped at €1.20 a litre and petrol at €1.10. 

Fuel is currently selling for around €2 a litre amid spiralling inflation and the protesters say they won’t move until their demands are met.

#KAZAKHSTAN: President Issues "Shoot-to-Kill" Order To Quell Riots Protesting Steep Price Hikes

Kazakhstan’s government resigned last Wednesday after protesters angry at a sharp rise in motor fuel prices took to the streets in several key cities, marking a big test for the country’s president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Kazakhstan’s president as well as international media are saying that Kazakh security forces have taken control of most of the city streets in Almaty, where days of riots have raged and central government buildings have been torched. Heavy military vehicles and armaments have also been seen deployed across other major cities. 

This after Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered his security forces to "shoot to kill without warning" - according to state media.
