German lawmakers on Friday approved legislation that will make it easier for transgender, intersex and nonbinary people to change their name and gender in official records.

The “self-determination law,” one of several social reforms that Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Left-leaning coalition government pledged when it took office in late 2021, is set to take effect on Nov. 1.

UK Labour Party Leader Sir Keir Starmer has said some women, as many as one and every 1000 - have a penis this weekend, in an interview that is likely to cause friction within the Labour Party.

The Holborn and St Pancras MP has repeatedly found himself struggling to define what a woman is since taking over the role of Opposition Leader in 2020. Taking a definitive stand on the side of transsexual activists will likely invite withering criticism from conservatives, as both parties prepare to head into elections.

#UK: The UK Government Vetoes Scotland's Gender Reform Bill

Scotland’s parliament voted to pass its Gender Recognition Reform bill in December, following in the footsteps of 18 other countries that have removed barriers for transgender people to legally change their gender.

After months of debate and scrutiny, the bill was met warmly, passing through parliament 86 to 39, and called “a big step forward” by LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.

That was until earlier this month, when the U.K. government vetoed the bill. This marks the first time in Scotland’s history that the government has exercised such power.

#UK: Controversial Scottish Gender Bill Vote Delayed

The final vote on controversial proposals to make it easier for people in Scotland to change their legally recognised gender will be held later than planned.

The Scottish Parliament had been due to vote on the legislation on Wednesday.

But with MSPs still debating proposed changes to the bill late at night, a decision was taken to delay the vote until Thursday afternoon.

#UK: Scotland Set To Enshrine Gender Pronouns Into Law

The UK Equalities Minister will use a dramatic eleventh-hour intervention ahead of the Scottish parliament’s gender reform vote to implore the SNP to delay the changes. 

Kemi Badenoch will meet Shona Robison, an ally of Nicola Sturgeon and the person steering the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill through parliament, tomorrow – only 24 hours before final talks on the divisive law begin. 

It is understood Ms Badenoch will call on the Scottish Government to explain how it has reached the conclusion that allowing people to self-identify as a different gender is the right path for Scotland, its people and the rest of the UK.

#UK: Scotland Poll Shows 90% Oppose Gov't Gender ID Bill

A Scottish Express reader poll suggests mounting opposition to the SNP's plans to enforce gender self-ID laws in Scotland.

Of 608 members of the public sampled, an overwhelming majority of 90 per cent said they opposed the Scottish Government's controversial proposals to push forward reforms to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA).

The poll, hosted on the Scottish Express Twitter account, asked Do you support the SNP's plans to allow people to self-identify their own gender without medical or legal evidence?

The results are in line with the previous, scientific poll, which should 71% of Scottish voters opposed the bill.

#SCOTLAND: New Gov't Guidance Allows Four-Year-Olds To Choose Their Gender At School

Children as young as four will be able to change their gender at school without their parents’ consent under guidance introduced in Scotland.

Any pupil who decides they want to switch gender must be supported and listened to in school following the Scottish Government advice.

The guidance applies in primary schools, where the youngest children are only four or five, because "recognition and development of gender identity can occur at a young age."

#IRELAND: Law Requires Businesses Disclose Gender Pay Inequity

The requirement for businesses to report the gender pay gap is now set to become law after the Gender Pay Gap Information Bill passed all stages of the legislative process.

The gender pay gap is the difference in the average pay of women compared with men in a particular organisation. It should not be confused with the concept of equal pay for equal work, which is already covered under the Employment Equality Acts.

#HUNGARY: Parliament Rejects EU Declaration On Gender

Hungary’s parliament adopted a political resolution, sponsored by government coalition partner party, the Christian Democrats, rejecting the Istanbul Convention. The declaration said the Council of Europe document takes, an "unacceptable approach" to defining gender, and said parliament should not incorporate this approach into national law.

The declaration was adopted with 115 votes in favor, 35 against and three abstentions. It calls on the government not to go any further in acceding to the convention and to lobby the European Union to do the same.
