Salvini’s League and other parties including the centre-left Democratic party and populist Five Star Movement that make up Italy’s broad ruling coalition have been left in disarray after failing to agree on a mutually acceptable candidate for head of state in last week’s presidential election, culminating with Sergio Mattarella, 80, being elected for a second term against his earlier expressed wishes.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has resigned following a blistering attack on coalition partner Matteo Salvini.

Conte said Salvini had been "irresponsible" in creating a new political crisis for Italy for "personal and party interests."

Salvini, the leader of the populist League Party, had tabled a no confidence motion against Conte, and earlier said his party could no longer work with Five Star.

The League and the anti-establishment Five Star Movement formed a coalition to govern just 14 months ago with Conte as an independent as prime minister.

Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy's League Party, has called for a snap election, citing differences with coalition partners over taxation and other issues

A failed attempt by the Five Star Movement to derail plans for a high-speed rail link was the final straw showing that the coalition could no longer govern together,  said Salvini, Italy's Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. He compared the differences to a marriage, and called for a quick separation, "without slapping, for the children," he joked, at a party rally.

Salvini's right-leaning wing party is well ahead in opinion polls, due mainly to his stance against illegal immigration.

#EU: Populist Parties Form "European Alliance of Peoples and Nations" Group To Contest EU Elections

Italy’s Matteo Salvini has formally launched his much-anticipated bid to unite European right-leaning populist parties ahead of EU elections in May. "We want to reform Europe," he declared during a press conference at a swanky hotel in central Milan. "For many people, the EU is a nightmare, not a dream," said the Italian interior minister and deputy prime minister.

Salvini's League Party in Italy has teamed up with Germany's populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, whose leader and currently the group’s only Member of the European Parliament, Jörg Meuthen was by his side. Also at the table were representatives from the Danish People's Party and the Finns Party of Finland, who are for now the only other confirmed members. The new group will be called European Alliance of Peoples and Nations (EAPN), Meuthen said, and is open to "anyone for whom conservatism and patriotism are important."

Italy’s coalition government is in sharp disagreement over protecting the independence of the Bank of Italy, after senior politicians threatened to remove its leadership.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, head of the Eurosceptic League Party, said the central bank and Consob, the country’s stock market regulator, should be “reduced to zero, more than changing one or two people” and that “fraudsters” who inflicted losses on Italian savers should “end up in prison for a long time."

Such language is rarely heard from politicians, and reminded some of the jail sentences and recriminations doled out to Bankers in Iceland after the financial crisis of 2008.

Italy's Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, spoke to thousands of supporters in a packed square in Rome this past weekend as his surging League Party celebrated six months in power.

Organisers said around 80,000 people attended - many travelling from around the country - waving flags and banners with slogans such as "Italians first", "Italy raises its head" and "Six months of common sense government." He praised the "yellow vest" demonstrators in Paris.

A center-right coalition including Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia and the anti-immigrant League Party won about 37 per cent of the parliamentary vote, according to preliminary results.The Euroskeptic League Party has taken the reins of the coalition after winning 18 per cent of the vote with leader Matteo Salvino declaring that the center-right bloc has won "the right and the duty to govern." The Five-Star Movement Party won 31% of the vote, becoming the largest party.
