CZECHIA: Defense Min. Says Nation Should Leave UN For Failing To Condemn Hamas Attack On Israel

[world politics news]

Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová has  lcalled on her government  to leave the UN for supporting terrorism: “Three weeks ago Hamas murdered over 1400 Israelis, more victims for their population than Al Qaeda murdered in the US on 9/11.

And only 14 countries, including ours, have spoken out clearly against this unprecedented terrorist attack. I am ashamed of the UN. Czech Republic has no place in an organization that cheers on terrorists and does not respect the fundamental right to self-defense. Let's get out!”

SLOVAKIA: PM Fico Returns To Power

[world politics news]

Slovakia is poised to have a new government led once again by Robert Fico. With help from a former party member and the extreme right, Fico has been parroting Viktor Orbán’s rhetoric, raising speculation if Bratislava will soon go the same direction as Budapest or stay on calmer terms with the EU.

After securing his coalition deal with his old cabinet colleagues, Robert Fico has not backed down from his aggressive rhetoric, earning a suspension for his Smer Party from the Party of European Socialists (PES).

Some of the cabinet nominees caused an outcry in the Slovak media over their pro-Kremlin and conspiracy talking points, while concerns are high that Smer will meddle with the judiciary and police, possibly threatening the country’s access to vitally needed EU funds.

AUSTRALIA: Voters Decisively Reject Aboriginal "Voice" Plan For Parliament

[world politics news]

Advocates for constitutional change in Australia said they were devastated by the defeat Saturday of a referendum that would have created an advocacy committee to offer advice to Parliament on policies that affect Indigenous people, the nation's most disadvantaged ethnic minority.

More than 59 per cent of voters opposed Voice to Parliament, with almost half the votes counted by Saturday. The loss is unofficial but is not contested. All six states voted against the plan.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese blamed his political opponents' campaigning against the measure for the failure. Critics say backers of the Voice were vague on details of the body, including how its members would be chosen and its powers. Opponents also called the plan racially divisive.

New Zealand’s next prime minister will be Christopher Luxon, a former chief executive of Air New Zealand, whose center-right National Party will lead a coalition with Act, a smaller libertarian party.

#ISRAEL: Netanyahu, Gantz Form Emergency Wartime Gov't

[world politics news]

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Unity party leader Benny Gantz announced a landmark agreement on Wednesday to establish an emergency wartime government, after Hamas launched a brutal and unprecedented assault on Israel early Saturday that claimed the lives of over 1,200 Israelis, the single deadliest day in the country’s history.

The establishment of the new “national emergency government” — an unthinkable prospect mere days ago amid long months of bitter national divisions over Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul plans — underscored the extent of the shock the nation has suffered and the degree to which politicians and the entire country have been unnerved by the sudden severe threat to national security.
