The Czech Republic's Social Democratic Party recently re-affirmed its faith in current party leader – Deputy Prime Minister Jan Hamáček, who has been challenged by many in the party and his own vice chair Martin Zimola, after the party's weak performance in recent elections. Hamáček has only led the party since March of this year. He is currently the nation's Minister of Interior.
Zimola, who started his own reform platform within the party, wants the party to rethink its role in the minority government, but was unable to convince the leadership and Hamáček to make the change. Political observers say the party is likely to face a split in the near future.
