#PAKISTAN: Former Cricket Star Imran Khan Claims Victory In Presidential Election

Pakistan cricket hero turned politician Imran Khan claimed victory on Thursday in the country's tense general election, following accusations of "blatant" vote-rigging by rival parties. There was no official confirmation of results from Pakistan's election commission almost 24 hours after polls closed in Wednesday’s vote but partial, unofficial tallies showed Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party enjoying a clear lead.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam have been flown to Islamabad after they were arrested upon their arrival at Lahore airport. Security in Lahore was beefed up as thousands of Sharif’s supporters marched to the airport. The father-daughter duo were sentenced to lengthy jail terms by an anti-corruption court in Pakistan last week. Sharif was given a 10-year jail term over the purchase of luxury London apartments, while his daughter Maryam was sentenced to seven years in prison.

#PAKISTAN: Senate Rejects Raising Minimum Marriage Age From 16 To 18; Says "Un-Islamic"

Pakistan’s Senate has struck down legislation governing the minimum age girls can marry, saying a Bill to increase the legal age from 16 to 18 was un-Islamic. The Child Marriage Restraint Bill was rejected after Senator Sehar Kamran, the lawmaker driving the proposal, had her request for a deferment denied on the grounds that she would not be present.

#PAKISTAN: Ousted PM Sharif Names Brother As Successor, Must Win By-Election First

Ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has named his younger brother Shahbaz to replace him as the country’s leader, after having been removed from office by the Supreme Court for lying on a wealth declaration. Shahbaz Sharif, currently the chief minister of Punjab province, which is Pakistan’s most populous region and the Sharif’s political heartland, will have to resign from that post and run for a by-election to join parliament before he is elected as prime minister.

#PAKISTAN: Frmr. Pres. Zardari Returns From Self-Imposed Exile, Threatens Mass Protests

Pakistan’s former president Asif Ali Zardari has returned to the country, ending his 18-month- long self-imposed exile, amidst speculations about his future role in the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which has threatened a major protest against the Nawaz Sharif government. The party has asked the government to change the interior minister and appoint a full-time foreign minister, among other demands, before December 27 or face street demonstrations. So far, none of the demands have been fulfilled.

#PAKISTAN: Info. Minister Denies #ImranKhan's Accusations of Vote Tampering

Information Minister Pervez Rashid has rejected claims of Movement For Justice Party leader Imran Khan that over 34,000 bogus votes were found during recounting in the NA-122 constituency in 2013. An inquiry found 3642 "unverified" votes, with seals of 15 polling bags found broken and 10 not appropriately sealed.

Over the objection of Islamist parties, Pakistan's National Assembly has amended the constitution to allow the creation of military courts to bring Taliban insurgents who killed 134 schoolchildren last month to justice, as well as to try others who wage war in the name of religion.
