#MOLDOVA: In Anti-Russian Move, Parliament Changes Languages

The Moldovan parliament has voted through a law to replace the Moldovan language with the Romanian language in official legislation in what has been regarded as a symbolic stand against Russia as tensions grow in the region.

The law, which will see all official legislation written in Romanian, rather than Moldovan, as well as replacing the phrases "official language", "state language" and "mother tongue" with “Romanian”, is set to be implemented in 30 days. The Moldovan language is very similar to Romanian, however, has historically been written using Cyrillic script, like Russian, rather than Latin letters, like Romanian.

#UKRAINE: Military Signals Push Into Moldova

Signaling that the war in Ukraine may spread to yet another country, the Ukrainian Army has declared in its readiness to help Moldova get rid of the 1500 Russian soldiers who illegally occupy Moldovan territory in Transnistria.

#MOLDOVA: Election To Decide Between West and East

Voters in Moldova headed to the polls Sunday in a snap parliamentary election called by new President Maia Sandu to strengthen her position against pro-Russia forces.

Sandu, who wants to bring Moldova into the European Union, in November defeated sitting Kremlin-backed president Igor Dodon on a pledge to root out graft in one of Europe's poorest countries.

Sandu won 57.75% of the vote to Dodon's 42.25%, according to the country's electoral commission.

#MOLDOVA: Newly Elected Pro-Russian Pres. Dodon Lurches Nation Towards Putin

Igor Dodon, an advocate of Moldova’s tighter ties with Russia, has already drastically swing his nation towards Putin's Russia since being sworn in as president of the former Soviet republic on December 23. In his first days in office, Dodon dismissed Minister of Defense Anatol Salaru, a member of the Liberal Party, for his pro-NATO views and took legal steps to cancel the bill under which the government was supposed to pay from the budget the $1bn siphoned off from the three bankrupt banks in a massive fraud that shocked the EU. He also scheduled a meeting with Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin for January 17 in Moscow. Russia’s deputy PM, Dmitri Rogozin, attended Dodon’s inauguration.

A pro-Russian politician has won Moldova's presidential election, according to final results released on Monday. In the full count, Igor Dodon won 52.2 percent of Sunday's vote. His opponent in the race, Maia Sandu, who ran on an anti-corruption ticket, had 47.8 percent.
