The Maldives parliament has opened debate on an amendment to the country’s General Elections Act proposed in mid-February by a lawmaker with the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party, which would allow only journalists working for media outlets registered with the government and approved by the Election Commission to report from voting and vote-counting sites on election days, according to multiple news reports and Ahmed Naif, secretary-general of the Maldives Journalists Association.

#MALDIVES: Former President's Party Wins Landslide, Promises China Debt Probe

Maldives former president Mohamed Nasheed's party won a landslide in the archipelago’s parliamentary election. His Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to secure 65 seats in the 87-member parliament, giving it a clear majority to push for reforms including imposing the country’s first income tax and instituting a minimum wage for the first time.

Pres. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is also from the MDP and unseated pro-China leader Abdulla Yameen in September, had urged voters to back his call for an investigation the scale of debts to China, which the party fears could run as high as US$3 billion and risks sinking the economy.

#MALDIVES: Legislation Giving Sweeping Powers To President "Sabotaged" By Absent Lawmakers

Lawmakers from the Maldives' four-party ruling coalition have been accused of sabotaging a bill on granting sweeping powers to commissions formed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to recover stolen assets and investigate unresolved murders in the nation, which lies in the Indian Ocean.

Speaker Gasim Ibrahim ended Tuesday’s sitting of parliament without putting the bill to a vote as the number of lawmakers present was one short of the 43 members of parliament needed to pass laws. Many lawmakers refused to enter the chamber to vote on the measure. Even some coalition lawmakers were reportedly opposed to empowering the inquiry commissions.

The Maldives military locked down the nation’s parliament on Tuesday in what opposition lawmakers said was an attempt to block a motion to impeach the speaker of the house. Imthiyaz Fahmy, from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, tweeted a video of what he said were security forces in plain clothes blocking representatives from entering the chamber.
