#LEBANON: Parliamentary By-Elections Postponed Due To Instability, Covid-19

Parliamentary by-elections to replace 8 resigned MPs were postponed until after Jan. 2021, in accordance with a decree issued by the caretaker prime minister’s office, the state-run National News Agency reported Wednesday.

The by-elections were postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country, with at least 400 cases registered daily, and due to the “current conditions,” the NNA said.

The decision was made by caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab and President Michel Aoun.

#LEBANON: Gov't Wins Confidence Vote, Despite Violent Protests Outside Parliament

Lebanon's Parliament has backed a new cabinet and the government's financial rescue plan in a vote of confidence held despite attempts by protesters to block it.

Parliamentary Speaker Nabih Berri congratulated the legislators who sat through a nine-hour session on Tuesday before holding a vote that saw 63 of 84 MPs present give their confidence to the new government formed last month. Twenty MPs voted against the government and one abstained.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has asked former Education Minister Hassan Diab to form the country's next government as its prime minister after the Hezbollah Party and its allies nominated him during long-awaited talks with members of parliament.

#LEBANON: Mass Protests Over Government Corruption

Hundreds of thousands of protesters rallied Sunday across Lebanon to condemn official corruption and demand the government resign, on the eve of a deadline for politicians to accept a reform package.

The capital Beirut, second city Tripoli in the north and the southern port of Tyre all came to a standstill, with streets filled with protesters waving the national flag, chanting “revolution” or “the people demand the fall of the regime” — a common refrain of demonstrations in other parts of the Arab world.

#LEBANON: PM Resigns, Citing Meddling From Iran, Hezbollah Death Threats

Saad Hariri has announced his resignation as Lebanon's prime minister and implicitly blamed Iran and its Lebanese ally, Hezbollah, for his decision. In a televised speech on Saturday, he said he suspected there were covert plans to target his life, but he did not elaborate.
