#UK: PM Johnson Survives Confidence Vote

[world politics news]

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his Government can now “move on” following a “convincing” and “decisive” result in a Monday vote of confidence among conservative members of parliament.

He told broadcasters: “I think this is a very good result for politics and for the country.”

Johnson added that it was “a convincing result, a decisive result, and what it means is that as a Government we can move on and focus on the stuff that I think really matters to people."

The vote was 211 stating they had confidence in Johnson's leadership, with  148 saying they did not.

Had Johnson lost the confidence of his party, he would likely have stepped down as prime minister and head of the party, facilitating new elections.

#UK: Pressure Mounts On PM May To Resign As Disastrous EU Election Looms

[world politics news]

Conservative Members of Parliament are said to be counting down the hours until Prime Minister Theresa May quits as she is said to have 'barricaded' herself in her official residence at 10 Downing Street.

Whether that is literally true is uncertain, but she is certainly isolated from many in her party at this point.

This state of affairs follows the surprise resignation today of Andrea Leadsom, the leader of the House of Commons, on the eve of the European elections that will likely see the party wiped out by the new Brexit Party.

All polls have shown an extremely high level of anger at Theresa May's conservatives over the party's failure to deliver an exit from the European Union as they promised in the last election.

#UK: Prime Minister Theresa May Survives No Confidence Vote, But She's Weakened

[world politics news]

Prime Minister Theresa May has won a vote of confidence in her leadership of the Conservative Party by 200 to 117. After securing 63% of the total vote, she is now immune from a leadership challenge for a year, but she still faces calls to resign, and analysts say she still has survived the vote weakened. Dangers to her power include her partners in government, the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland, which could still withdraw their support, causing her government to fall. Speaking in Downing Street, she vowed to deliver the Brexit "people voted for" but said she had listened to the concerns of MPs who voted against her.

BREAKING: #UK: Multiple Reports Indicate Leadership Challenge, Confidence Vote In Theresa May, Has Been Triggered

[world politics news]

This evening, there are multiple reports that Prime Minister Theresa May is to face a "no confidence" vote, triggered by 48 letters to the chairman of the party's "1922 Committee," Sir Graham Brady. If that number is reached, a leadership challenge will go forward, putting much pressure on May, who has just returned from discussions with Europeans seeking amendments to her Brexit plan, to resign.

The BBC reports: "Several sources, including a cabinet minister, have told the BBC they believe 48 letters have been submitted. The BBC has also been told that senior backbencher Sir Graham Brady has asked to see the PM on Wednesday."
