Japan's finance minister, Taro Aso, has said he will return a full year's salary after his ministry was found to have tampered with public documents. An inquiry found that references to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife were removed from papers relating to a controversial sale of state land. Aso said the scandal has "hurt" public confidence in the ministry and the government.

Finance Minister Taro Aso has warned of the need to address the country's low birthrate, in a fiscal policy speech. "Now is the time we should tackle the structural challenges of the low birthrate and the aging population," Aso, also deputy prime minister, said. In 2013, he shockingly said that the elderly, including himself, should "hurry up and die" if they were ever on life-support.
