By the time the polls closed on April 15th, 66.2% of South Korea's eligible voters had cast a ballot, more than in any parliamentary election since 1992. And they had voted overwhelmingly for the governing Democratic Party, largely due to their handling of the coronavirus crisis.

As much of the world remained in virus-induced lockdown, South Koreans donned face masks and plastic gloves to show that even in a pandemic, the journey to the polling booth is essential.

#SOUTHKOREA: All-Female Party Formed To Contest Parliamentary Seats

South Korea is regularly ranked lowest in the developed world for gender equality, but for the first time a feminist party is seeking parliamentary seats at Wednesday’s election, accusing the political establishment of having failed women.

The party was founded last month on International Women’s Day on the back of a surge of anger over the country’s spycam porn epidemic and other crimes, and against a backdrop of an enduring pay gap and employment and childcare issues.

Against the backdrop of a sluggish economy, South Korea's ruling conservative party suffered an upset defeat in a parliamentary election Wednesday, a stinging blow to Pres. Park Geun-hye, whose Saenuri Party had been expected to regain a majority. Saenuri took 122 of the 300 seats in the single-chamber National Assembly, while the main opposition Minjoo Party won 123 seats and the People's Party grabbed 38.

Political parties have kicked off their campaigns for April 13th Parliamentary elections with specific goals in mind. The ruling Saenuri Party has vowed to claim a clear-cut victory by reclaiming more than a majority in the National Assembly, where it currently holds 146 out of 292 seats. The opposition Minjoo Party of Korea says the election will be a referendum on the incumbent administration's handling of the economy.
