#PERU: Parliament Calls Early Election Amid Turmoil

Peru has been gripped by nationwide unrest since the impeachment and arrest of President Pedro Castillo on December 7. The demonstrators protest against Castillo's disempowerment and demand the resignation of his successor Boluarte.

They are also demanding that Parliament be dissolved and that new elections be held immediately. More than 20 people were killed during the protests. The snap elections now scheduled by parliament for May, 2024 are an attempt to contain the crisis.

Peru's Congress voted to oust President Pedro Castillo in an impeachment trial on Wednesday, shortly after he attempted to dissolve the legislative body and install an emergency government.

#PERU: Demonstrators Demand Embattled Leftist President Resign

Pedro Castillo — the subject of six corruption investigations — cannot be prosecuted while he is Peru's president. He also has no intentions of resigning.

Thousands of Peruvians took to the streets across the country on Saturday demanding his resignation.

The leftist leader, who took office in July of 2021, has already politically survived two attempts to impeach him. There are currently six corruption cases against him, an unprecedented number in the context of Peruvian politics.

#PERU: New Leftist President To Strengthen Trade Ties With China

In his first week in office, Peru’s new left-wing administration under President Pedro Castillo has been quick to extend a friendly hand to China, the Andean nation’s most important commercial partner and the main buyer of its copper, a crucial source of tax revenue. 

Since Castillo was inaugurated on July 28, administration officials have met with the Chinese ambassador and Chinese mining executives to discuss not just policies for their industry but also to strengthen a previous free trade agreement first signed in 2009, government sources told media.

#PERU: Leftist Teacher Has Narrow Lead In Presidential Vote Tally

Left-wing candidate Pedro Castillo has edged into the lead in a dramatic twist in Peru's presidential election.

With 94% of votes counted, Castillo overtook his right-wing rival, Keiko Fujimori, who is running for the presidency for the third time.

He has a lead of 0.1 percentage point, with just over 25,000 votes currently separating the two candidates.

They have both called for calm while the count is under way. This is Peru's most polarized election in recent history.
