#CHINA: European Olympic Committees Warn Athletes Not To Bring Smartphones To Beijing

The Belgian, Dutch and British Olympic committees have warned their athletes against bringing their personal laptops and smartphones to the upcoming Beijing Games, out of cybersecurity concerns.

Matthias Van Baelen and Geert Slot, spokesmen for the Belgian Interfederal Olympic Committee and the Dutch Olympic Committee respectively, told local media and Reuters that cybersecurity is a risk in their assessment for the trip to China.

#JAPAN: Gov't Official In Charge Of CyberSecurity For 2020 Olympics Has Never Touched A Computer

The man in charge of cybersecurity for 2020 Olympics has never touched a computer. Yoshitaka Sakurada was questioned by opposition party members in the Japanese Diet last month. In one particular exchange with Constitutional Democratic Party member Masato Imai he made a surprising revelation. “From the time I was 25 I ran my own businesses, so I always had secretaries and employees, and so I never touched a computer personally," Sakurada admitted. The 68-year-old minister’s remarks came at about the same time that Microsoft Japan warned of a heightened risk of cyberattacks to Olympic host countries.

#RUSSIA: Duma Passes Stiff Penalties For Coaches In Wake Of Doping Scandal

Parliament has passed a bill imposing new sanctions, including prison terms, for coaches found guilty of coercing athletes into doping. The bill was adopted by the State Duma unanimously in the run-up to the publication of a fuller version of the Word Anti-Doping Agency report into doping in Russia. Coaches or sports officials could be liable for a fine up to 300,000 rubles ($4,700) or up to a year in prison in cases where young athletes are coerced into using banned performance-enhancing substances.

#BRAZIL: Courts Approve Protests During Olympics; Protesters In Stadiums Removed

The current political turmoil faced by Brazil has spilled into the Olympics, with reported cases of spectators being physically removed from stadiums for protesting against the country’s interim government. Now, a Brazilian federal court judge says that any suppression of political manifestations by security forces is unconstitutional. That hasn't stopped some protesters from being removed from stadiums.

#BRAZIL: Senate Suspends Need For Visa For Visitors During 2016 Summer Olympics

The senate in Brazil has exempted visa requirements for foreigners coming to Brazil during the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The government hopes the move will encourage more tourists to travel to Brazil during the August event.
