ISRAEL: Netanyahu Bans Aljazeera TV; Biden Condemns

The Biden administration lashed out Monday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled that he will ban Aljazeera, a Qatari government-controlled news channel, in Israel because of the lies it has told about the October 7 terrorist attack and because some of its journalists are said to have participated in the attack.

Israeli lawmakers in the Knesset passed a measure in a lopsided, 71-10 vote Monday, giving Netanyahu the authority to ban the organization.

#ISRAEL: Justice Minister Launches Reform Of Legal System

Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced his plans for judicial reform on January 4, and the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee held an introductory session on January 11. Levin and Simcha Rothman, the committee’s chairman, on January 11 and 12 published draft texts of three different laws that include all of the parts of the reform that were announced so far and are intended as a “basis for discussion.”

#ISRAEL: Bennett Gov't Gets 2021, 2022 Budgets Thru Knesset

Israel's parliament approved a 2022 national budget on Friday by a vote of 59 to 56, giving a greater measure of fiscal stability to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's cross-partisan coalition government.

It was the first national budget approved by parliament in 3 years.

The spending package was ratified after the Knesset had earlier passed a belated 2021 budget ahead of a deadline which, if unmet, could have triggered a snap election.

Members of Israel Parliament (Knesset) voted to limit anti-government protests after an all-night debate over the controversial move. 

At around 4:30 am, the chamber finally voted 46 to 38 to pass a bill severely restricting demonstrations amid a second national lockdown in an effort to drive down rapidly rising coronavirus cases.

#ISRAEL: Knesset To Take Up Controversial "Jewish State Bill" Next Month

The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, is expected to advance the so-called “Jewish State bill” - also referred to as the “Nationality” or “Nation State bill" - next month according to Israeli media, amid ongoing controversies over the bill’s discrimination of Palestinian citizens of Israel. A committee established to promote the bill would be given two consecutive sessions next month, despite the Knesset being in recess during that time. The bill declares that Israel is “the national home of the Jewish people,” and that “the right to realize self-determination in Israel is unique to the Jewish people.”

With a 48-41 vote in the 120-seat Knesset, Israeli lawmakers gave initial approval to a bill to redefine Israel as "the national home of the Jewish people." Authors called the bill, which would enshrine Hebrew as Israel's official language, "especially crucial in times like these, when there are those who seek to undermine the Jewish people's right to a national home in their land." The bill revokes the status of Arabic as an official language, even though it is the mother tongue of one in five citizens.
