A Chinese lawyer, however, accused former leader Jiang Zemin of running an "extra-constitutional" group to persecute Falun Gong religion practitioners like his client, who was acquitted by the judge.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully has told MPs not to attend events involving the controversial spiritual movement Falun Gong later this month because the Chinese Embassy will monitor them and lodge official protests. The Communist Chinese government views the group as politically subversive, which it denies.
