#BRAZIL: Pres. Dilma Rousseff Impeached, Removed From Office

Brazilian senators have voted by 61 to 20 to permanently remove the president from office. Lawmakers accused her of breaking budget responsibility rules. Decision ends the 68-year-old's five-and-a-half-years in power, and more than a decade's dominance by her leftist Workers' Party. She had been suspended in May, pending a trial in the Senate.

After Brazil's senate voted 55 to 22 to suspend Pres. Dilma Rousseff for up to 180 days and put her on trial for corruption, she vowed to fight the charges, saying she "may have made mistakes but I did not commit any crime." Rousseff, Brazil’s first female president, will be judged by senators. Vice President Michel Temer, who has become an outspoken opponent of Rousseff, has taken power as acting president.

He is faces charges and immanent arrest over a corruption scandal. The appointment prompted anti-government demonstrations across Brazil, as a secretly recorded phone call between the two suggested his appointment to a ministerial position was motivated by a desire to avoid prosecution.

Prosecutors investigating Brazil’s state-run oil company on corruption charges have issued an arrest warrant for the strategist who engineered embattled Pres. Dilma Rousseff’s 2014 re-election. Police say that João Santana - a consultant for Rousseff and a former treasurer for Rousseff’s ruling Workers’ Party - accepted $3 million in bribes from engineering firm Group Odebrecht as compensation for Petrobras construction contracts.
