#ALBANIA: Parliament To Elect New President May 5th

The first round of voting to elect Albania’s new president will take place on May 4, according to Taulant Balla, leader of the Socialist majority’s parliamentary group.

In a press conference on Monday, Balla announced he had forwarded the request to Speaker of Parliament Lindita Nikolla, and will soon begin bipartisan consultations to reach “consensus.”

#ALBANIA: Three Balkan Nations Sign Trade Deal

Five new agreements were signed on Tuesday after a meeting in the Albanian capital Tirana between the leaders of Serbia, Albania and North Macedonia as part of the Open Balkan initiative, which aims to replicate the Schengen Zone’s free flow of people, capital and goods, initially between the three countries but potentially across the entire region.

The agreements between the three countries covered labour market access, the interconnection of electronic identification schemes, and cooperation on veterinary medicine and food safety.

#ALBANIA: Court Orders $474,000 Settlement To Gov't Employee Fired Over Politics

The Court of Fier in Albania has ordered Albpetrol, owned by the Albanian government, to pay €400,000 to its former employee Marjus Isufaj and his family.

In its October 26 verdict, the court argued that Isufaj was discriminated against and fired due to his political activity with the Socialist Movement for Integration.

#ALBANIA: Parliament Censures President For Cancelling June 30 Local Elections

A parliamentary resolution approved by 100 votes to seven has censured Albania's Pres. Ilir Meta for cancelling nationwide local elections, scheduled for June 30.

#ALBANIA: Pro-EU Socialist Party Wins PM Vote, Secures Parliamentary Majority

Albania's left-wing Socialist Party secured a second governing mandate in the June 25 parliamentary elections, winning a majority of seats in parliament, nearly complete results show. The election is seen as a key benchmark to the country's bid to launch membership negotiations with the European Union. With more than 95 percent of the ballots counted, the Socialists of Prime Minister Edi Rama won about 48 percent of the votes, or 74 places in the 140-seat parliament.

Albania's Parliament held on Thursday the second round of voting for election of the new President of the Republic. This round lasted only for few minutes because no candidate was standing for the post and according to the law, under these circumstances, voting is considered done.
