#BRAZIL: Former Pres. Hopes To Run Again In 2026

[world politics news]

Brazil's former president is hoping to make a comeback in the 2026 presidential election, if he can overcome the significant hurdle of being banned from running until 2030, that is.

Jair Bolsonaro's Liberal Party is banking on Congress passing a constitutional amendment that would overturn the court order banning him from running for office until 2030.

"Bolsonaro's charisma is amazing. People turn out in droves. Some cry when he appears in public," he said in an interview.

Brazil's electoral authority declared Bolsonaro ineligible to seek office again for eight years due to his baseless attacks on the country's electronic voting system. He is also under investigation for allegedly plotting a coup after he lost the 2022 election to leftist President Luis Inacio Lula de Silva, which he denies.

Big taxes will be imposed on imports of electric vehicles from China to the EU after the majority of member states have backed the plans.

The move to introduce tariffs aims to protect the European car industry from being undermined by what EU politicians believe are unfair Chinese-state subsidies on its own cars.

Charges of up to 45% are to be enforced on electric cars made in China for the next five years, but some fear the move could raise electric vehicle (EV) prices for buyers.
