The union representing journalists has called "absurd’" the Australian Council of Trade Unions' decision to ban the media from attending Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's address to the ACTU Congress dinner. The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance said it had registered a complaint with the ACTU over the exclusion of journalists from the dinner in Brisbane. MEAA Media section president Marcus Strom said it was “the first time anyone can recall journalists being excluded from the Congress dinner." Media reports said people were Tweeting and live-streaming the event. UK Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn also spoke at the event.
