#JAPAN: Diet Approves Controversial Law Paving The Way To Legalized Casino Gambling

The Upper House of the Diet has approved legislation paving the way towards legalized casino gambling in Japan for the first time. The legislation gives Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government a year to develop specific plans on issues such as licensing operators and preventing gambling addicts from using casinos. Further legislation in coming years will enable the first casino to open in the early 2020s. It's part of Abe’s drive to make Japan a more tourism-oriented nation. It as backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and conservative opposition Nippon Ishin no Kai.
