Less than a week after regional elections in the small Austrian state of Burgenland, the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) entered a coalition with the right-wing Freedom Party. The alliance marks a sharp change for the Social Democats, which in a 2004 conference resolution, reaffirmed in 2014, described the Freedom Party as "right-wing extremist" and rejected "any coalition with the right-wing populist FPÖ at all political levels."
