Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has resigned as the chief of the Palestinian Liberation Organization along with over half of the 18-member PLO executive committee, but will retain his post as president of he Palestinian Authority. The move by the 80-year-old forces new elections for the ruling board, the first since 1996.
