The Union Cabinet is likely to take up a bill to provide recognition to transgender persons and protect their rights, says the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry. A private member's bill on the Rights of Transgender Persons has already been passed by the upper house of parliament. The Supreme Court in 2014 recognized the right of Indians to choose their own gender.
