#BRAZIL: Former Pres. Hopes To Run Again In 2026

[world politics news]

Brazil's former president is hoping to make a comeback in the 2026 presidential election, if he can overcome the significant hurdle of being banned from running until 2030, that is.

Jair Bolsonaro's Liberal Party is banking on Congress passing a constitutional amendment that would overturn the court order banning him from running for office until 2030.

"Bolsonaro's charisma is amazing. People turn out in droves. Some cry when he appears in public," he said in an interview.

Brazil's electoral authority declared Bolsonaro ineligible to seek office again for eight years due to his baseless attacks on the country's electronic voting system. He is also under investigation for allegedly plotting a coup after he lost the 2022 election to leftist President Luis Inacio Lula de Silva, which he denies.

#BRAZIL: Court Bars Frmr. Pres. Jair Balsonaro From Running Again in 2026, Backs Wife's Candidacy

[world politics news]

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's hopes of reclaiming the presidency in 2026 may be over. But that doesn't mean there won't be a Bolsonaro running in three years' time.

Brazil's federal electoral court (TSE) on Friday froze Bolsonaro's political career, barring the fiery nationalist from public office until 2030 for spreading baseless claims about the country's voting system in last year's election.

The ruling represents a devastating setback for the 68-year-old career politician who was until recently Brazil's most powerful man.

But it may not spell the end for the Bolsonaro clan.

Speaking on Thursday shortly after landing in Rio de Janeiro, where he was greeted with shouts of "criminal" and "coup-monger," Bolsonaro backed his wife Michelle for president in 2026.

"Of course, I would support a Michelle candidacy," he said.

#BRAZIL: As Leftist Lula Sworn In As President, Bolsonaro Boycotts, flees to Florida

[world politics news]

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected, took the reins of the Brazilian government Sunday in an elaborate inauguration, complete with a motorcade, music festival and hundreds of thousands of supporters filling the central esplanade of Brasília, the nation’s capital.

But one key person was missing: the departing president, Jair Bolsonaro.

Without him, there was no ceremonial passing of the presidential sash ,  an important symbol of the peaceful transition of power in a nation where many people still recall the 21-year military dictatorship that ended in 1985.

Instead, Bolsonaro woke up Sunday 6,000 miles away, in a rented house owned by a professional mixed-martial-arts fighter a few miles from Disney World. Facing various investigations from his time in his office, Bolsonaro flew to Orlando on Friday night and plans to stay in Florida for at least a month.

#BRAZIL: YouTube Removes 15 Videos Of Pres. Bolsonaro

[world politics news]

YouTube has removed videos posted by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for violating its content policies, in the strongest measure yet that tech giants in the social media–loving country have taken toward censoring the president.

YouTube has said that if Bolsonaro breaks the video-sharing service’s rules again, his channel may be suspended for a week and, in case of recurrence, he should be permanently banned.

The video platform told the outspoken leader last week that 15 of his videos had been removed from his channel for spreading COVID-19 misinformation - some of which promoted alleged coronavirus "cures" that critics say can sometimes cause collateral health damages like kidney failure.

#EU: France, Ireland Threaten To Block EU/South American Trade Deal Over Rainforest Destruction

[world politics news]

Members of the European Parliament from France and Ireland are threatening to block a trade deal between the Europe and South America's trading blocs over rampant destruction of the rainforests in Brazil.

Environmentalists accuse Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro of cutting protection to the area deemed crucial to combating climate change. The rainforests are being clear cut for farming at a record pace, say environmentalists. NASA, however, has said that overall fire activity across the Amazon basin this year has been close to the average compared to the past 15 years.

For now,E officials are defending the deal, which has taken 20 years to hammer out with the Mercosur trading bloc, because they say it ties them into honoring the Paris Agreement's environmental rules.

#BRAZIL: Jair Bolsonaro Inaugurated As President; Takes Nation Away From Decades Of Left-Leaning Gov'ts

[world politics news]

Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in as Brazil's president today, ending 15 years of socialist-leaning governments that have been racked by corruption scandals and a faltering economy. Bolsonaro's campaign was highlighted by an attempted assassin who stabbed him in the chest, leaving him in the hospital for weeks. He won broad support from men, women, the old and the young.

Bolsonaro, using a provocative style that has been compared to Donald Trump's, has pledged to purge the country of corruption and crack down on crime. Brazil's once-promising economy, which averaged 4% GDP growth between 2004 and 2013, has been crippled by recession and corruption scandals at the highest levels of government. Four ex-presidents and numerous other politicians are under investigation or on trial.

#BRAZIL: Pres. Candidate Bolsonaro Wins Place In Oct. Run-Off

[world politics news]

Right-leaning presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro won the first round of the national election on Sunday by a margin of 17% but fell short of the 50% of valid votes needed to win outright, and avoid a run-off.
He will face the left-wing Workers' Party candidate, Fernando Haddad, in the second round on October 28. He said he would not turn into a "peace and love" candidate to win votes.

He has promised to appoint "many" military officers to his cabinet, which has stoked fear in some of the return to the military dictatorship of the 1980s. He is denied that this is his plan. His Social Liberal Party, which has just eight deputies in the 513-seat lower house, won 52 in Sunday's election.
